About Be Water Smart and the Regional Water Authority Water Efficiency Program

Be Water Smart is sponsored by the Regional Water Authority Water Efficiency Program (RWEP) and 19 water providers. These agencies in Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties plus the City of West Sacramento are working together to help their customers use water efficiently.

The RWEP was established with the idea that water providers could maximize resources and customer services through collaboration. Accomplishments, programs and services include:

A triple value

RWEP partners with wastewater and energy utilities to fund high-efficiency clothes washer rebates, recognizing a triple value in reducing water, wastewater and energy. In 2008 alone, 687 clothes washers were replaced via the rebate program, saving more than 20 million gallons in water and 70,000 kilowatts in energy.

Rebate programs

Since 2003, RWEP members in partnership with local wastewater and state water agencies have provided more than $2 million in rebates to replace nearly 17,000 water-guzzling toilets with high-efficiency models. In one year alone, the program is estimated to have saved 20 million gallons of water and 60,000 kilowatts of energy.

Economies of scale

RWEP allows members to leverage their investments in water efficiency and take advantage of grant funding available. This approach is already yielding dividends. The RWEP has secured nearly $4.9 million to date from highly competitive grant programs. Grant awards include:
