The “Blue Thumb” educational campaign encourages residents to use water efficiently through every-day tasks such as using an automatic shut-off nozzle on hoses, stopping runoff and adjusting their watering schedule according to the season. Studies show that most water use—and water waste—occurs outdoors. People can make a big difference in their total water use by making sure landscape irrigation is efficient and by eliminating water waste.

The campaign is sponsored by the Regional Water Authority and 19 water providers in Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties plus the City of West Sacramento who are working together to help their customers use water efficiently. It is also funded in part by a Department of Water Resources 2008 Urban Drought Assistance Grant.
